The wild horse
files/picturebar/63.jpg
Takhi is a mongolian word and means holy. This is how the Mongols call their wild horses. In 1968 the last free-living wild horse was seen in Mongolia – in the Strictly Protected Area (SPA) Great Gobi B.
Since this time the wild horse was declared as extinct in the wild. Only a few animals have survived in zoos and in private hand. Thanks to the huge engagement of this private persons and zoos some wild horses live in freedom again since the last century.

Development of the project
Till the end of the 20th century the focus of the International Takhi Group was on the reintroduction of the wild horses. The Takhi is still in the center of our interest, but the protection and the conservation of the habitat becomes more and more weightfull. The habitat shall be developed as a Biosphere Reserve in the sense of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Takhi is now the umbrella species of the Great Gobi B.
