Wolf The wolf in the Great Gobi B

The wolf is the biggest predator in the Great Gobi B reservation and the only one to be possibly dangerous for the wild horses. There are indeed documented kills of wild horses by wolves.


It is generally spoken not very easy to distinguish animals actually killed by wolves from animals which died from another cause and were then devoured by wolves. Further, missed animals are likely to be claimed as killed by wolves.


The local nomads lose an estimated 1-2% of their cattle to wolves. Relative losses are higher amongst unwatched horses, cattle and camels compared to the closely watched sheep and goats.
There is little known about wolves in Mongolia. Nomads, who have to deal with the wolves immediately, are thus a very important source of information. A survey has therefore been run amongst the nomads by the International Takhi Group.
